Sedation can be appropriate for children who are extremely apprehensive, the very young, and those with special needs. There are 3 levels of sedatives:
• Nitrous oxide gas• Medications for conscious sedation• Medications for unconscious sedation
Nitrous oxide, given through a small breathing mask, allows a child to relax without feeling sleepy. It is mild, non-addictive and quickly eliminated from the body.
Conscious sedation – where a child remains conscious but may be drowsy – can be achieved with any of several medications.
Unconscious sedation, or general anesthesia, is provided in our office with the assistance of an anesthesiologist.
Dr. Araghi will select the best sedation method for your child, based on health specifics, dental treatment and other considerations, and will be happy to discuss her selection with you.
